Review: Gingerbread Doodle

Beautifully illustrated app for making and decorating your own gingerbread house!

View on the App Store: Gingerbread Doodle - Shoe the Goose

Features of Gingerbread Doodle:

  • Enjoy Christmas creativity all year round.
  • With so many choices you really can create a unique masterpiece each time.
  • Understand the process of making and decorating a gingerbread house, helps to teach children.
  • Plan your house and see how it will look before you make one!
  • Engaging, educational and delightfully fun.

This is another excellent crafting style app from Shoe the Goose providing hours of creative entertainment for young, and older children.

Choose from 7 different style of gingerbread house firstly.  Once you have your shape you are asked to select either "Recipe" or "Instant".  The recipe selection gives you the list of required ingredients to make this particular gingerbread house and all the ingredients are displayed on the page for you.

Each ingredient has to be added to the bowl in the appropriate way, for example the eggs need to be 'cracked' by tapping on them, the flour needs to be 'sifted' by turning the handle of the sifter, the butter needs to be 'sliced', the salt needs to 'shake' into the bowl etc.

This process of 'creating' and mixing the ingredients is excellent to educate your toddler or young child about what is required to bake the gingerbread house for real!

Once all the ingredients are in the bowl you get the chance to 'mix' them which really looks as if they are all combining. Next the dough is rolled out with your rolling pin, again something you get to do.

This next step I think is so wonderfully educational.  The individual pieces needed for the gingerbread house appear in the dough and need to be tapped to cut them out.  This shows how pieces of flat dough come together to create a 3 dimensional structure.  This is a great help when baking a gingerbread house for real!

Into the oven they go...you hear a 'ding' when the time is up and you then drag the parts together to make the shape of the house you selected as your initial choice.

As if that wasn't already heaps of fun...you now get to decorate it.  As with all the 'Shoe the Goose' apps the selection of tools for decorating is vast and very creative.  Start with frosting, choose from pre-made colours and a colour selector for more an even more unique house.  Colour each piece of the house individually to decorate and with this app you cannot go over the lines during this stage which is wonderful for little ones!

Next choose from hundreds of 'tips' and 'toppings' including a great range of purely Christmas designs, sprinkles, jellies , hearts, piping, candies and 'jazzy' items such as lights, snowmen, snowflakes and Christmas hats to name but a few!

You can make your own cookies to put on your gingerbread creation.  If you make a mistake there is an 'undo' button in the form of a backwards arrow.

Save your masterpiece, email it, 'eat it'.  All of this for just a few cents!!  Lots of festive fun for your young and older children alike...I enjoyed making a few houses too!
